Sonya Derman is an interdisciplinary visual artist and educator based in Brooklyn. Her work is rooted in painting and writing, drawing from vernacular and nostalgic imagery, prosaic still lives and portraiture, and self-help mythologies. Through associative thinking and the visual layering of representations, she explores the tension between public and private life amongst contemporary demands of self-branding and continuous performativity.
She received a BA in Studio Art from Carleton College, an MA from the Royal College of Art, and NY State K-12 teaching certification in the graduate program of Art Education at Brooklyn College.
